Festive Styling Tips with Joë, of Conscious Curations

With a briskness in the air and twinkly lights strung high, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Bring that toasty feeling home with warm, brassy accents, seasonal foliage, and distinctive styling which adds a modern touch to your festive display. We’ve connected with stylist extraordinaire Joë to show you just how it’s done! Joë is a Devon-based stylist with her finger firmly on the pulse of tablescaping trends and fresh ways to breathe new life into your interior. So, without further ado, onto her top tips!

Our Pip footstool has recently found a home in your pretty living room. Can you tell us what drew you to the Linara Moonstone fabric?

I wanted to pick a fabric that added a subtle touch of colour to my living room. Having neutral cabinets and a sofa, the Linara moonstone offered a gentle light blue colour with a sage tint to the space that wasn’t too much. I love a bright living room, and using lighter tones will lift my north-facing space - the ottoman did this! When the sample arrived the fabric was super soft, and I felt this was the one for me.

What are your top tips for styling an ottoman?

Books! Layering your favourite books that offer beautiful prints or even neutral colours, depending on your style, can add featured elements to your ottoman. My favourite is also adding seasonal blooms that provide a natural element to the living room. There is nothing better than foraging your own cuttings or popping to your local supermarket. Flowers offer a range of styles and colours that create a beautiful focal point.

I also love to add some candles that sit above the books. I’m always changing which candle I use as it depends what mood I’m in. Accompanied with some brass elements like candle snuffers that add a different finish to the ottoman, some metallic wares can add that special touch!

With Christmas around the corner, we would love to hear your recommendations for festive tablescaping!

For a festive tablescape I recommend using a linen base, whether it be bold or simple. Start to play around with festive colours like whites, reds, and greens, exploring richer tones like burgundy and forest greens. I love to bring nature in with locally foraged foliage or flowers, adding interest with vases of varying heights.

Then choose your crockery and add side plates for extra layers. You might want to mix and match to add more interest to the table, or if you love to keep it more formal go for a minimal colour scheme. Experiment with placemats to make your plates stand out, and pick napkins that can be folded in various ways - a velvet bow adds a lovely touch or even mini church bells!

For glassware, use two types: one for the main drink and a tumbler for other refreshments. Then start to elevate the ambiance with tall taper candles in various colours or a traditional white. Happy hosting!

How do you like to decorate your home for Christmas?

Adding fresh foliage around the house does the perfect trick. This year I’ll be experimenting with my mantle piece with a lovely garland, adding a mixture of foliage and Christmas decor to the living room and dining table! Not to forget a REAL Christmas tree - I love how natural they look. Plus, there are a lot of design trends this year with the additional bow ties which look lovely dotted around, then subtle golden warm LED lights, brassware, and baubles that suit your colour scheme.
