Top Interior Trends for 2018

Top interior trends for 2018
- what’s in and what’s out?

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century design will remain popular throughout 2018 with many of us coveting this versatile and stylish trend. Whether you opt for single mid-century inspired pieces, revive an original vintage find, or go all out with mid-century décor; there is a little piece of mid-century design for every home. Mid-century furniture shapes are clean and elegant, with raised tapered wooden legs and slim arms. We have a myriad of mid-century styles to choose from at Arlo & Jacob, like our new compact Earnshaw (pictured below), or our Philo family; a popular mid-century design with slim legs and sabre arms.

Navy Velvet Sofa

According to The Homewings Interiors Trend Report 2018, a midnight blue velvet sofa is a top pick this year. Besides the practical properties that come with having a dark coloured sofa; velvet is a sophisticated and smart choice for all living rooms. Velvet works on every style of sofa, whether you opt for contemporary, mid-century or a more traditional shape. If you want to nail two trends in one piece, opt for a mid-century style sofa, like our Bardolph (pictured here) in sumptuous navy cotton velvet for a stylish sofa that your friends and family will swoon over.

Terracotta, Rust and Earth Tones

2018 will see our interiors move away from escapist, tropical themes and towards rich earth tones and natural elements. Think terracotta, rusty browns and warm neutrals with eastern influences. Fabrics will be woven and nod towards traditional tapestries and ancient techniques. We’ll see an increase in these terracotta, rust and earthy tones with natural elements across our interiors. Contrast the burnt oranges by introducing small highlights of azure blues.

The Understated Armchair

Pared-back furniture with an elegant silhouette will become increasingly popular throughout 2018, moving away from bulkier styles. The delicate wooden frame of our Jemima rocking chair encapsulates the trend beautifully. Opt for cool linens and cotton fabrics to bring in more natural elements to your interior scheme.

Matte Black and Golden Brass Accessories

Make way for sleek, matte black accessories. Think ceramic ware, lighting, smaller accessories and even taps and door handles. If dark colours aren’t your thing, then opt for brass lights and accents to lift your scheme (and your mood). These materials look fantastic across a range of styles, but matte black looks exceptionally chic in a modern setting, while brass works in traditional, mid-century and modern homes alike.

Terrazzo Tile Floors

This seventies trend is going through a complete revival in 2018 and has been brought bang up to date. It’s a very affordable flooring option and also makes a striking impact when used on walls and other surfaces, like bathrooms and kitchen worktops. Terrazzo is made from off-cuts of stones and other materials; it comes in many different colours and tones, so you’re bound to find a shade that suits your home.

What’s out in 2018?

Millennial pink is losing popularity in 2018 as we see a shift towards peach-based tones and a more sophisticated colour palette. While pastel pink won’t completely disappear, it will certainly be used less and become more of an accent colour as opposed to a canvas colour.

Mixed metallic are out, along with copper and rose gold accessories, and are to be replaced with polished golden brass and matte black accents seen above. The look is more sophisticated and polished with reflective surfaces being used very sparingly.

All white colour schemes and accessories are out, especially in kitchens, and pops of colour are definitely back with a bang. Deep greens, teals and blues are high up the list with dashes of terracotta and bright red for focal points. Colour palettes should be sophisticated and cohesive to create an overall curated look. Green remains a very popular choice, but will move toward deep forest and emerald shades as opposed to the bright Pantone Greenery that we saw everywhere in 2017.
