Arlo & Jacob is a contemporary furniture brand steeped in a history of craftsmanship. All our furniture is designed in-house by our talented product team – and occasionally in partnership with renowned designers, like Tim Fenby and interior professionals like House & Garden magazine. Working from our factory in Long Eaton, we design, hand make and deliver upholstered furniture with a difference.
Our Long Eaton Heritage
Our factory is in Long Eaton, the home of British upholstery.
From 1830, Long Eaton was renowned across the world for its high-quality production of lace. The reputation and respect of Long Eaton within the upholstery and interior design industries still holds true to this day.
Our factory is renowned within the upholstery industry for its excellence. Our carpentry is likewise held in very high regard – we still use the traditional method to ‘glue, screw and dowel’ our frames, as opposed to simple staples that some other furniture makers use. It’s this combination of craftsmanship and quality materials that results in timeless pieces of furniture that will last you a lifetime.
This historic location is where all of the beautiful Arlo & Jacob furniture is made today.
Arlo & Jacob Today
Arlo & Jacob started in 2015. We handmake our sofas the old-fashioned way, bringing a sense of fun and a contemporary twist to our sofa designs. Arlo & Jacob is named after our MD's two little children, which encapsulates our ethos as a brand who puts family at the heart of everything we do.
Made in the UK
We are immensely proud that our sofas are all manufactured entirely in the UK. As well as being locally made, we are environmentally conscious: all the beech and birch hardwood in our frames is ethically sourced from FSC managed forests to help preserve the environment. The steel that makes our coiled springs comes from across the road, and our springs are made by hand at our factory, giving our seating the cloud-like bounce that we’re known for. Attention to detail is paramount at our factory, and every task is undertaken by skilled experts, on a one-man, one-job basis – even down to the painting of the turned wooden legs. Each piece of wood is individually painted by our exceptional craftsmen and women to make sure they’re the perfect colour, whether it’s rich chestnut or a light natural glaze.
Our upholstery room is alive with activity and the tip-tapping of sewing machine feet. One of the many skills of our talented sewing team is called ‘pattern-matching’. The sign of a truly good-quality sofa is when the pattern of the fabric, be it stripes or florals, perfectly matches along the seams and all joins, including the arms and back of the sofa. What’s more, we also undertake full upholstery, which means that all our cushions are fully upholstered on both sides and the base of the sofa. Many other brands use cheaper lining material on the underside of cushions to save on cost but deliver an inferior piece of furniture.
It’s very rare for a furniture company to have complete control of the manufacturing process, right down to the locally sourced steel in our coil springs. By having our own factory, we know exactly where our materials come from and who makes your sofa, so you can rest assured that it is of the highest quality. What’s more, once the sofa has been through our quality control checks, it is sent out for delivery to our ‘white glove’ delivery team, who will deliver your furniture to your room of choice, unwrap it and remove all the packaging.
