Living room inspiration: Mondrian

Coffee Table with Mondrian Artwork

Looking to create a stylish yet comfortable living room? Our resident team of sofa designer experts share their top tips for creating a cosy home.

This month we take inspiration from Mondrian and his COMPOSITION NO. II WITH BLUE AND YELLOW (1930). Mondrian colour blocks his primary colour palette to create a look that is simple yet sophisticated. Although he uses a mix of shapes and sizes, there is a sense of order and balance created through the use of linear forms.

When using a colour-blocked scheme in the home, choosing a pared-down palette will create a softer look. Ink blue walls combine cosiness with sophistication, whilst the rich mustard of the Wallis armchair adds a flash of vibrant colour.

The Wallis, an easy chair with a soft fluted back, brings home comfort and glamour reminiscent of an ‘Old Hollywood’ lounge bar in the 1930s. Add extra comfort with a chunky knitted throw – we love this from Zara Home.

To complete the retro look, finish with a reclaimed lamp, such as this from Skinflint Design.
