How It's Made

We’re all about distinctive British designs, personalised to suit you and yours! Each piece of furniture is made to order, minimising waste and maximising personality. We craft our creations in the heart of the British sofa making tradition: the East Midlands. It all starts with a solid foundation - which, in our case, is the sofa frame. We then move onto building out the structure and style, upholstering the form, and moulding distinctive design details like scrolled arms and turned hardwood legs. The result is an icon of modern British design, made to stand the test of time. Read on for a closer look at the magic in the making… 

When it comes to crafting our top-quality sofas, there are five key ingredients… Frame, Foam Kit, Springs, Fabric & Cushions

Our sofas come together in something of an orchestral fashion. The process begins by preparing each of the ingredients individually. 

Our stewards of style start with the frame, which is made to the highest standard and guaranteed for life. We use European FSC timber so we can be sure not only that we’re working with quality materials, but that we minimise our environmental footprint, too. So, the first step is forming each piece of the frame in strong and sturdy hardwood. Then the craftsperson will assemble the frame for maximum strength and durability. While many other sofa makers simply staple the pieces of their frames together, we take a tried and true three-step approach. Each join is dowelled, glued, and screwed into place for the best, most robust results. 

Then the foam kit is prepped, pulling together the padding which will later be applied to build out the sofa’s soft and sculptural form. The springs are gathered to create the perfect level of support in the seat. The fabric of your choice is then cut to one of one thousand patterns specially developed to suit our many sofa designs, sizes, and formats. Our machinists will sew all of the pieces together, beautifully finishing the seams for a neat and polished look. Finally, we create the cushions which will add up to a supple seat designed for many years of lounging in peak comfort. 

Then comes the magic of putting it all together! Each sofa is built out by one pair of capable hands, allowing for full attention to detail and ownership of the process. The frame is padded to create the sofa’s distinctive shape and lend it a sense of softness. Next, the springs go into the base and the job of upholstering gets underway. We’ll then fit a black bottom underneath to seal all of the inner workings in and create a clean, finished quality.

At this stage, the sofa will be united with its matching turned hardwood legs, carefully made by our friend, Steve just down the road. We’ll leave those off for delivery to make maneuvering all the easier - but not to worry! Our in-house delivery team will professionally fit them once your sofa has made it to its new home. 

From here, it’s off to Quality Control to triple-check that all is up to snuff. Then we’ll wrap up the whole kit and caboodle and off it goes to meet its new family. Voilà!
