Get the Look: How to decorate a striped sofa in coastal style

Stripe it rich! Bold and optimistic prints are having an interiors moment. Timeless and versatile, you can decorate a striped sofa to suit your home interior and add a playful richness.

The promise of a seaside escape has fuelled the return of a classic striped sofa. Maritime-inspired decor, including playful stripes, have enjoyed a new lease of life and have taken over interiors with enthusiasm not seen since the 90s.

Stripes have made their comeback as homes evolve to become sustainable, reassuring, yet still aesthetically curated for social media.

“Stripes are classic, and it’s such a popular pattern because you can take them to different places,” shares Laura Barnard from Arlo & Jacob. “With stripes, they can be quiet Scandinavian, subtle and natural, or they can have this eccentric British vibe where you are layering with patterns and colour.”

“Although a classic, stripes are being modernised, and they are a lot punchier, and so, feel more optimistic.”

One refreshing approach is to show stripes’ softer side, such as our new Devon Stripe featured on the sumptuous Helena sofa. Or you can layer it up with other bold prints and embrace its eccentric British side. Either way, stripes feel optimistic and modern.

Our Get the Look showcases a striped sofa with some of the UK's most interesting young design talents, including Gergei Erdei, Jermaine Gallagher and Sascal Studio.

"We have all grown up with the British seaside from buckets to deck -chair stripes," adds Catherine Caines, Arlo & Jacob's Content Producer. "We wanted to include lots of fresh products created by bold British talent to give this nostalgia a twist."

A new generation of designers, stylists, and interior lovers take traditional prints and energise them with optimistic boldness. We forecast 2021 as the year when stripes strike back.

"We’ve all gone chequerboard mad, and stripes are in the same genre," concludes Laura Barnard. "They are traditional, but you do have these new and fun design companies, from Brooklyn to London, who are coming up with bold and happy stripes."
