Meet the makers

Diane Blount – Sewing Room Manager

Here at Arlo & Jacob we pride ourselves on being British made, built to last. But we want you to hear the stories that are behind our brand, and what better way than meeting our makers?

This month Diane Blount, our sewing room manager here at Long Eaton is giving us a behind the scenes peek at what it takes to do her job.

“I’ve been here for just over thirty years, having joined the company in 1983! It’s not really the kind of job that can be taught in a classroom! Having started out as a machinist I learnt everything hands-on on the job. Everyone here is very friendly so I have picked up tips and tricks along the way. I then worked in quality checking for a time and have worked my way up to overseeing the floor as Manager. Perhaps hard work does pay off!”
“As a manager, a large part of my job is overseeing the bigger picture. One of the most important aspects is making sure production keeps flowing on the sewing room floor, as we can’t afford to have delays.”

And what do you think makes an Arlo & Jacob sofa different?

“We use quality materials and traditional methods such as hand cutting some intricate patterns, and also have a huge range of exciting fabrics. Most of all though everyone that works here is very good at what they do.”

Tell us one thing about your job we wouldn’t expect.

I had never really thought about it but you do have to have a good eye for making sure everything lines up perfectly. Stripes are particularly tricky!

What’s the most important skill required for your job?

The most important aspect of my role has to be producing the specification sheets for each model. These are used by all the machinists on the floor to produce the products I develop, so have to be spot on to ensure consistency.
“The most important feature for my dream sofa is comfort, without a doubt! You can have the most beautiful sofa in the world, but if it’s not comfortable to sit on then it’s not doing what it’s designed for.”

What’s your favourite thing to do when relaxing on your sofa?

“I like to take time out on my sofa just for me getting stuck into a really good book.”

And which is your favourite A&J piece and why?

My favourite is Knightley, because I really like the heart-shaped back.
