About the House & Garden Collection
Celebrating their 70th anniversary, the House & Garden Collection, in collaboration with Arlo & Jacob, is a hugely exciting new venture for House & Garden magazine.
At House & Garden, admiring and sitting on beautifully shaped sofas and chairs is almost part of daily life – be they the latest design from a Chelsea showroom, an antique Howard armchair at an antiques fair or a bespoke creation by an interior designer. We have strong feelings about what makes a stylish and comfortable place to sit, and so it felt natural to apply this trained eye to designing our own range of sofas and armchairs. Branching into products is new for us, but The House & Garden Collection fills an obvious niche bringing smart, elegant, well-tailored sofas and chairs to a wider market at an accessible price.
The search for a partner took several years. We looked for a company that would take us seriously, understand what we wanted to achieve and work closely with us to bring our designs to fruition. Importantly, the collection needed to be well made and manufactured in Britain. Arlo & Jacob was a natural fit: a new brand with ambition, but underpinned by craftsmanship and a heritage of manufacturing in Long Eaton. The company designs, makes and delivers, and in just two years has assembled a sizeable collection of popular shapes of its own. It was clear that Arlo & Jacob had all the skills needed to translate our ideas into reality and that our collection would complement the designs in its west London showroom.
This initial House & Garden Collection is inspired by shapes we see in the houses and rooms we feature: stylish, much loved classics brought up to date, rethought and refined. English country house style – and the generosity of spirit, deep comfort and sense of prettiness that goes with this – was our starting point, but the idea is, change the fabric and each of these designs could make the chicest of statements in a sophisticated town house.
The designs were conceived by our decoration director, Gabby Deeming, who has paid special attention to the kind of details we love, but struggle to find on a sofa at an affordable price. These include single seat cushions, smart painted legs, and generous and considered proportions that look elegant as well as being comfortable.
The pieces first took life as sketches back in December 2016. Factory visits followed with tweaks to arms, deepening of seat cushions and deliberations over fabrics, which all took several months. We are now delighted to present our first collection of six pieces that we would be pleased to have in our own houses. We are confident that other people will feel the same way.
"The House & Garden Collection is an exciting first for us and Arlo & Jacob have been a joy to work with. It has been a fun few months, almost year, in the planning with Decoration Director Gabby Deeming making lots of trips to Long Eaton to tweak prototypes and discuss the minutest of details with the Arlo & Jacob team to get each piece exactly how we want it – the idea is we are bringing a House & Garden eye to a well-priced, comfortable and useful range of seating."
"We’ve been fortunate to collaborate with such a well-renowned magazine. It’s been an exciting project to work on from start to finish. Collaborating closely on the designs, through the product development stage and photography. I’m now eager to reveal the collection to see what everyone thinks of the designs."
